Commissioners receive planning permission for new social housing

Planning approval has been granted for two new blocks of social housing flats to be built in Ramsey.

It was put forward by the commissioners to develop a vacant brownfield site in the town.

The application will see 30 new flats built across the former Albert Road School and Close Woirrey site, which will all be two beds.

Jasmine Eastwood from McGarrigle Ayre was representing Ramsey Commissioners, and said the development would help meet the housing needs of the town.

She added that the new site would be made more flood resistant than it was previously – and includes plans for permeable paving and more grassed areas.

There were also concerns about the amount of parking available in the flats, which had been reduced by 18 spaces.

However, the planning officer was happy with the reduction due to the proximity of the bus station.

Ramsey Commissioners currently has the third longest wait list, with 92 applicants and it has about 550 houses under its management.

The committee were all in agreement that the development would help clear the list and support the housing needs of the town.

It also said that social housing in general is much needed and would’ve preferred a bigger development in Ramsey with more flats included in the plans.
