Children warned against jumping into harbours

£2500 fine to act as deterrent to extremely dangerous activity

Following on from last weeks warning regarding dangerous pier and cliff jumping a plea has now gone out for people to stop swimming in harbours.

The harbours division are particularly worried about children not being aware of the dangers of boats manoeuvring aswell as the shock that can set in when jumping into the freezing water.

Besides being a dangerous activity swimming in a harbour is an offence under the byelaws, and if convicted can result in a fine of up to £2,500.

Although there have luckily not been any serious incidents connected to the activity as yet there have been numerous cases in the UK with people suffering severe injury.

Captain of Harbours Mike Brew has said first and foremost they want to get across the safety message, but also warns the police will get involved for anyone caught breaking the law.
