Chamber of Commerce: "Feeling the pinch - why not get a second job?"

Feeling the pinch - why not get a second job? That's the suggestion from the Island's Chamber of Commerce as locals struggle to keep up with the rising cost of living.

In a post on social media, the COC say it's 'acutely aware' there is a severe workforce shortage on Island - which in turn, is having a direct impact across all sectors, particularly, in retail and hospitality.

It adds '"in a world where we're all feeling the pinch, have you considered a second job?"

It claims doing so will 'increase earnings and support local retail and hospitality businesses, alongside giving the economy a much-needed boost.'

It comes as the latest Consumer Prices Index shows the Island's inflation rate stands at 10.4%, with our government recently stepping in to freeze electricity prices - to help locals and businsses get through the winter.

Volatility in energy markets has seen a surge in the cost of fossil fuels since the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.

Last month the government launched ‘Isle of Man Help for Households’ – a new website detailing a range of government support that can help residents and businesses deal with the costs of living.

Cabinet Office Minister, Kate Lord-Brennan MHK said:

‘We’ve launched this single advice point website to make it easier and more accessible for everyone to find the help and advice needed during these times. A dedicated phoneline will also go live next Monday to ensure those in the community who may not use the internet are able to access any help and advice.

‘We know that people will be worried with the rising costs as we head into the colder months, so we want to make it clear that help and advice is available.’

The launch of the website and community phoneline forms part of the wider support package announced earlier this year to help those struggling with the rising costs.

Most recently though, the Island's Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson said current Government measures to help with the cost-of-living crisis are 'not enough.'
