'Celebrate Tynwald Day your way online'

Although it won't take place in its traditional form, residents are encouraged to celebrate Tynwald Day from the comfort of their own homes.

The ceremony in St John's will take place next Monday (July 6), however due to the Coronavirus pandemic some key aspects of the celebrations involving participation from the public and visitors have been cancelled.

Back in April it was confirmed the occasion is being scaled back and so won't involve the Tynwald Fair, VIP guests or the military guard of honour - petitions for redress are not being presented in person and have to be submitted online.

There also won't be any grandstand seating and parking will be limited to the small number of car parks ordinarily operating in St John's.

Officials say whilst social distancing restrictions have been removed, the lifting of those rules did not come in time to put in place the infrastructure needed to carry out the celebrations in the usual way.

As a result, people are being asked to share how they will instead by spending their time on the national day by sharing their experiences on the Tynwald Day social media channels including Facebook and Twitter or searching the hashtag #TynwaldDay or #TynwaldDayOurWay.

Tynwald President, Steve Rodan MLC, says: "Tynwald Day is celebrated each year not only by those present on the Island but also by our friends and families around the world and in many special ways.

"It is understandable that the absence of entertainment and facilities at St John’s may mean that people choose to stay at home on their National Day holiday – celebrating Tynwald Day Your Way.

"I look forward to seeing how the resilient Manx people mark the day with the family and friends they can now join together with."
