AIDS threat from drunk man who tried to bite police

A man who tried to bite police officers after he was arrested for being too drunk to look after himself has apologised to magistrates.

Douglas man Christopher Mcevoy appeared in court yesterday charged with being drunk and incapable and damaging a police cell.

The court heard he'd been drinking at a friend's house in Onchan and was arrested when she rang police at 7.40am on Wednesday, saying he'd left her house carrying a knife.

Police found Mcevoy on Meadow Close, as he sat waiting for a taxi in the rain, but found no knife.

When he was taken to Police Headquarters he became abusive and struggled with officers - trying to bite them and saying he had AIDS.

When placed in custody he used a cup to flood his cell causing £65 worth of damage.

The 50-year-old admitted both offences and was fined a total of £250 - he was also ordered to pay £247.50 in costs and compensation.

Magistrates told him: "Your behaviour at police headquarters was deplorable. For a man of your age, it was pathetic."
