Woman caught shoplifting 'to order'

Douglas Courthouse

A Douglas woman who 'steals to order' because she can't survive on her benefits will be sentenced next month.

38-year-old Karen Mckernan was caught shoplifting at Marks and Spencer on February 6th when a security guard noticed her putting beauty products into a bag she was carrying.

He stopped her in the street outside and recovered goods worth £183 - she'd also stolen two pillowcase sets from Tynwald Mills, worth £70, earlier the same day.

Police arrested her and searched her home - she admitted stealing items which she then sold on for half the price in order to "make extra cash".

At Douglas Courthouse earlier this week she pleaded guilty to two counts of theft - two further offences were also taken into consideration.

Social enquiry reports have been requested before she's sentenced on April 12th - she's been bailed in the meantime.
