Views still sought on taxi access for the disabled

There's just under a week left for people to have their say on what they think taxi access is like for those with disabilities.

Government launched a public consultation on the matter at the end of November last year to hear what residents thoughts are on proposed changes to the Road Traffic Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2020.

The alterations would aim to broaden the scope of the bill to include ply-for-hire taxis and create legal powers.

It could put obligations on drivers of designated wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

This could include giving assistance to wheelchair users to get into or out of a designated wheelchair-accessible vehicle; transporting a wheelchair if the passenger wishes to sit in a passenger seat; making no additional charge for carrying a wheelchair user and the carriage of assistance dogs accompanying their disabled owners.

Anyone wanting to take part who hasn't already can submit their views on the online government consultation hub before next Monday (February 15).

Alternatively, written comments can be emailed to sian.christian@gov.im or by post to Sian Christian, Central Support & Change Division, Department of Infrastructure, Sea Terminal, Douglas, IM1 2RF.
