UPDATE: Public urged to keep safe as Hurricane Ophelia affects the Island tonight

The public is being urged to keep safe as Hurricane Ophelia continues to affect the Island this evening.

Fallen down trees and overstopping in coastal regions have caused road blocks and traffic - people are being urged to travel only if necessary.

The Mountain Road will close at 6pm and roads will also be closed from 7pm along the northern end of Douglas Promenade, Castletown Promenade, Shore Road in Gansey and Fenella Beach and Castle Causeway in Peel.

The National Sports Centre and Palace Cinema have shut their doors too due to the bad weather.

All of today's flights from Ronaldsway Airport and all of today's ferry crossings have been cancelled.
