A large housing development in Union Mills has been given the green light after the developer won its appeal against a previous refusal.
Dandara Homes Limited has secured approval in principle to build on land bordered by Main Road, Trollaby Lane, and Strang Road.
The appeal was determined by MHK Lawrie Hooper, acting on behalf of the Environment Minister, following a public inquiry.
The independent inspector concluded that there is a 'pressing need' for new homes in the area, and that this need outweighs certain policy conflicts, such as the loss of agricultural land.
Concerns over traffic, infrastructure, and the site’s visual impact were deemed capable of being addressed at a later stage.
While the decision allows the scheme to proceed in principle, Dandara must now submit detailed plans for separate approval.
A phasing strategy will also be required to ensure infrastructure and environmental measures keep pace with housing delivery.
In total, 21 planning conditions have been imposed.
The minister’s decision is final within the planning system - any further challenge would have to be made to the High Court via a petition within three months.
