UK politicians can’t legislate for our country insists MHK

By Ewan Gawne - Local Democracy Reporter

An MHK says members of the UK Parliament who tried to legislate for the Isle of Man have failed to understand and respect Manx independence.

An amendment to the Financial Services Bill, backed by 40 MPs, would’ve forced the Crown Dependencies to take action on tax transparency, and make beneficial ownership registers public.

However the bill was pulled by the UK government just hours before it was due to be debated.

Dr Alex Allinson says those backing the amendment clearly don’t understand the Isle of Man’s parliamentary sovereignty, and need to ‘focus on getting their own house in order’.

He’s praised the leadership of Chief Minister Howard Quayle, who was in London to pressure MPs and protect the Island’s interests.
