Telecoms company Sure says a replacement mobile mast near Noble's Hospital would improve reception nearby.
The firm has applied for planning permission to put up a new 15-metre mast on disused land near Vagabonds rugby club.
In its application, it says an existing mast nearby can't be upgraded further because of the size and weight of new equipment.
And it adds the upgrade would give better coverage at the hospital and hospice as well as in nearby housing estates.
