The government's published the results of a public consultation into compulsory ID checks on ferries.
More than 1,400 people responded over seven weeks, with the majority saying passengers showing passports, driving licences or other photo ID would cut crime.
However, concerns were also raised about long queues at ports as officials check each person's documents.
The Department of Home Affairs says it'll now discuss the proposals with the Steam Packet Company.
