Police say the strong winds will continue into this evening.
The Strategic Coordination Group for Storm Darragh met this morning to decide how to tackle the dangerous weather.
The group says that there have been unusually powerful north-to-north westerly winds for this time of year, and that these winds will last until around 9pm tonight.
The Department of Infrastructure is currently focusing on clearing and maintaining the main routes around the Island.
