Concerned Union Members Will Have Presence Outside Tynwald Until Thurday
A protest will be staged outside of today’s sitting of Tynwald, held by steam packet workers who are currently concerned about the future of their jobs.
It all relates to the uncertainty that currently surrounds the Steam Packet after a large number of their freight business moved their custom to a newly set up service provided by Mezeron with the significant loss in revenue leading to talks of major cut backs across the company.
Teams of workers have been campaigning over the past week trying to raise awareness to the public about what they stand to lose from the service if cutbacks are a necessity.
We spoke to first officer on the Ben-my-Chree, Chris Bowen, who is also the liaison officer for the Steam Packet workers union, he said so far after a week of campaigning there has been an overwhelming response from the public, but now they must get the politicians onside. (audio above)
