Steam Packet to celebrate 190th anniversary

The Steam Packet Company will celebrate its 190th anniversary next week.

It's the worlds oldest continually operating passenger shipping company having served the Isle of Man since June 30, 1830.

To mark the occasion, it's fleet will sound whistles in Douglas Habour next Tuesday (June 30) at 6pm whilst decked in bunting.

Company Chief Executive, Mark Woodward, says: "As with any milestone, it’s nice to reflect on what has gone before, remembering the highs as well as the challenges overcome.

"The history of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is a wide-ranging one and everyone will have different memories and recollections.

"One thing we can all agree on, however, is that from the very first ship Mona's Isle to the current conventional ferry Ben-My-Chree or our fast craft, Manannan, the Steam Packet Company vessels have always provided a sense of pride and security for the people of the Isle of Man."

The organisation started with a wooden paddle steamer known as Mona's Isle which was built on the River Clyde and launched from Glasgow.

Since then, the company has endured as a vital part of the Manx community including through two world wars, takeover bids and numerous ownership transfers.
