Steam Packet dealing well with freight traffic, says Chief Executive

The chief executive of the Steam Packet has defended the company in wake of numerous cancellations recently.

Mark Woodward explained that Steam Packet had dealt well with its freight traffic despite the severe weather and the current damage to the Ben-my-Chree.

He said all urgent traffic had been shipped by Monday and the company always prioritised what the most vital deliveries are.

In response to calls for the company to charter another vessel, Mr Woodward said they’ve looked at this option but any vessels that are suitable in terms of size for Douglas harbour are typically older freighters with limited manoeuvrability themselves.

He also claimed there simply aren’t any available for short-term charter.
