Southern authorities set to feel waste pinch

Southern local authorities say changes to waste disposal could cost £15,000 more than expected this year alone.

It’s after the Department of Infrastructure announced it was phasing out a £5.7 million waste disposal subsidy over the next six years.

Now, Port St Mary Commissioners say it expects its bill for domestic and commercial waste to rise from £28,500 to £44,000.

If authorities choose to pass the cost directly to householders it could mean a rise in rates.

In Port St Mary the expected increase equates to around 11p in the rate but this could rise to 76p in 2018.

The commissioners said the costs are outside of their control but the board will continue to work towards reducing the impact of the increases on Port St Mary ratepayers.
