Six Bride villagers to contest local authority by-election

By Ewan Gawne - Local Democracy Reporter

Six people have come forward to contest a by-election in one of the smallest local authorities on the Island.

It comes following the resignation of three out of the five members of Bride Commissioners in January, after a breakdown in their relationship with the clerk.

Village residents Julie Billingsley, Ann Carter, Ian Colquitt, Julie Corteen, Joseph Monro and Jacqueline Turner will all stand for election on February 22.

Bride Church Hall has been chosen as the polling station, with residents able to cast their vote from 8am until 8pm.

The authority has effectively ceased to function without enough members to remain quorate, though parish rates were frozen before the trio of resignations were tendered.

It’s understood this will be the first contested election in Bride in several decades.
