Should queenie fishery be closed this year?

Discussions are continuing in an effort to decide what to do with the Island's queen scallop fishery this year.

It's after scientists recommended fishing should be suspended to allow stock levels to recover.

There have been record catches in the last four years but low numbers of juvenile queen scallops replacing them.

It means stock levels are now 53 per cent below historic levels and around 88 per cent lower than the peak level seen in 2011 and 2012.
