Sewers could be used to find illegal drugs

Could the Island's sewers be turned into a way to spot illegal drugs and infectious diseases?

That's one of the options laid out in a report by Public Health Isle of Man and the Department of Home Affairs into reducing the harm caused by drugs.

It says waste water surveillance could give accurate estimates of drug use - including how widespread the problem is and what drugs people are using.

The report says the system could also look out for infectious diseases and measure antibiotic use - but says more work is needed to figure out how much the system would cost.
