Same sex marriage given Royal Assent

Same sex couples on the Island will be able to get married in just two days' time.

In Tynwald yesterday it was announced the Marriage and Civil Partnership Act had been given Royal Assent.

From Friday same sex and heterosexual couples will be able to get a civil partnership on the Isle of Man.

The legislation was passed in April and is based on the same law that was passed in England in 2013.

Chief Minister Allan Bell - who's been fundamental in pushing through this law - says the recognition of same sex couples in Manx law is 'a truly historic moment showing how far the Island has come'.

He also believes it brings an end to the 'dark days' of discrimination on the Isle of Man.
