Safety first when holding firework displays this NYE

The Fire Safety Team on the Island are asking home owners planning a private fire works display this New Years Eve to follow all of the safety advice they give.

With regards to children, your reminded to ensure they're wearing gloves when handling sparklers, a bucket of water should also be on hand to dispose of the sparklers after they burn out.

The person co-ordinating the event is reminded not to return to fireworks which haven't activated properly. 

Incidents involving fireworks have seen a steady decline over the years, however this isn't a reason for complacency say the fire teams.

Fire fighter David Cowley spoke to 3FM, he has also put out a reminder that those handling the fireworks shouldn't be doing so whilst under the influence of alcohol:
