Roofing firm denies health and safety failings which caused blaze

The boss of a roofing firm accused of causing a major fire at Mount Murray has denied a number of health and safety failings.

Roy Cross, on behalf of Roofcraft, appeared at Douglas Courthouse yesterday where he entered not guilty pleas to two counts of failing to discharge duty and one of not complying with regulations.

The charges relate to a fire at the hotel and country club complex in Santon on November 7th 2013.

Cross is accused of failing to ensure the safety of his employees, and people at Mount Murray, and of not taking reasonable steps to let staff know he was working on the roof.

It's alleged he was using a blowtorch to try and dry some plywood after rain hampered repair work - however it set alight.

Despite his efforts to extinguish the flames Cross was unable to as he was contaminated with highly flammable fibreglass - this it's said resulted in him setting his clothing alight.

The case has now been adjourned for eight weeks - committal proceedings will take place on August 25th.
