Revenge attacker caught out on Instagram

A 20-year-old man has been ordered to do community service after a revenge attack on a teenager in Douglas was filmed and uploaded to social media.

Mahmoud Ali El Meligy had previously admitted an offence of affray from August 16th.

Douglas man El Meligy had followed his 17-year-old victim to Villiers Square before launching a volley of kicks and punches.

The victim's friends had recorded the attack on mobile phones, and footage appeared on Instagram, sparking a police investigation.

At Douglas Courthouse this week the court heard El Meligy had previously been attacked and claimed his victim was one of those behind the assault which had left him in hospital.

The boy sustained bruises to his head and face but hadn't contacted police about the assault - the attack only came to light when the footage emerged online.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told him "you deliberately targeted him and carried out a revenge attack upon him. There is no place on the Isle of Man for vigilantism."

She ordered him to do a total of 180 hours community service, which took into account two other unrelated offences, and pay prosecution costs of £250.
