Radical restructuring package planned for the Island's Meat Plant

Meat Plant faces insolvency within six months if changes aren\'t implemented

A radical restructuring package has been formulated in an effort to safeguard the Island’s Meat Plant from the prospect of closure.

The proposal, to be launched today, will enable the plant to take a more commercial approach and focus on marketing Manx produce to the consumer.

Despite drastic measures the Meat Plant has continued to struggle financially, with the Directors warning it faces insolvency within six months if changes aren’t implemented.

The plan will see the plant transferred from the Fatstock Marketing Association to a new Government backed company, which will allow it to be more responsive to consumer needs.

The alternative would have seen the closure of the plant, no Manx meat in local shops and a major increase in live animal exports to UK markets.

Agriculture Minister in the last administration of Government, John Shimmin, has said ‘The Island’s taxpayers cannot be expected to support a meat marketing system that does not meet consumer’s needs.’
