72 per cent of those who responded to a survey don't think charging motorists by the mile is a better system than the current road tax.
That's according to the latest figures revealed in response to a government consultation on vehicle duty.
In January, the Department of Infrastructure asked for the publics views on alternatives to car tax and the future of vehicle excise duty.
In response, more than 600 people made their views known, and only 28 per cent thought motorists being charged by the mile is a better system than the current one.
