The Sheffield Police Officer charged with causing the death of a Manx teenager, through careless driving, was yesterday cleared at Bradford Crown Court.
The court had heard how PC Rodney Craig Mills had been driving at twice the speed limit, without his lights or sirens, when he collided with Manx teenager Jamie Haslett, back in October 2010.
The 42 year old had said he was responding to an emergency call in the early hours of the morning, and had not expected anyone to run out in front of him.
Popular former St Ninian’s student Jamie had been returning to his University accommodation at around 3.45am following a night out.
Inspector Philip Shaw of South Yorkshire Police branded it a tragic accident, and said obviously its a relief the trial is over, but it wasn’t a day for celebration.
