Plea for people to use bowel screening tests

People who are being sent bowel cancer screening tests are being urged to use them properly.

The Department of Health says accuracy will be improved by more than 60 per cent if people follow the instructions on the colorectal kits.

Specimen cards have been sent to people aged between 60-75 in an attempt to detect the cancer early - with this being the age group highest affected.

Consultant colorectal surgeon Giovanni Tebala says people shouldn't simply take samples from one bowel motion, as it will significantly reduce the test's accuracy.

He says it's important to submit three separate samples:
