Plans for Peel town centre refurb to go on display

Plans to reinvigorate the shopping area of Peel will be available for members of the public to view later this week.

The proposals from the Department of Infrastructure are aiming to enhance Michael Street and Athol Place.

In its application, the DOI says the main shopping area in the town has 'reached the end of it's useful life' and that it is 'barely adequate' for pedestrians.

If approved, the project would include the reconstruction of the highway and footways with granite paving, as well as two ‘rain gardens’ in Athol Place.

These green spaces are said to help with drainage during heavy rain and provide habitats for wildlife - and, to assist the visually impaired, tactile strips will also be installed to help with navigation.

Restrictions over the last few months due to Coronavirus meant that, before now, the department had been unable to conduct formal consultations with residents and businesses.

The plans will be on display at Peel Town Hall on Thursday between 10am and 6pm, with officers from the design team on hand between 2pm and 6pm that day to discuss the proposals.
