Pensioner escapes jail after admitting benefit fraud

A pensioner from Jurby has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting benefit fraud.

73-year-old Douglas Corkill was spared jail at Douglas Courthouse earlier this week.

He had previously admitted four counts of making false representations to obtain the benefits between March and June last year.

He failed to declare he was working whilst claiming Income Support – this resulted in an overpayment of over £3,000 he wasn’t entitled to.

Sentencing him Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes imposed an eight week custodial sentence which is suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50 and told he must continue to pay back the deficit from his benefits.
