Peel commissioners have unanimously voted to oppose plans by Empire Garage to build apartments and homes at three sites in the town.
The decision was made at a local authority meeting last night (21 March), where more than twenty members of the public were in attendance.
It comes following a separate residents meeting held the day before, where around 100 people gathered at the Masonic Hall to voice a number of concerns about the scale and size of what’s proposed.
Empire Garage wants to build a total of 26 flats and five town houses at sites on Marine Parade, Stanley Road and Cross Street, and demolish the existing showrooms, garage and other buildings.
The commissioners opposed the application on a number of grounds, including the height and density of the proposed blocks, and over-intensive use of the sites.
Members also highlighted that the plans don’t conform with the Isle of Man Strategic Plan’s car parking standards, and have a negative impact on amenity.
The local authority’s submission will be assessed when planning officers produce a report on the application, and the public may also submit their own comments.
You can view the plans online via the government’s planning portal.
