PAG comment on Freedom of Information Bill receiving first reading in last HOK sitting

The group have alleged that its introduction has been delayed because CoMin feared its implications

The Positive Action Group have reacted to the Chief Minister’s move to give the Freedom of Information Bill its first reading in the final sitting of the House of Keys last week.

PAG have been persistent campaigners for the introduction of a Freedom of Information Bill after it was promised in the government’s four year strategic plan back in 2007.

They say by giving it its first reading in last weeks final sitting it would appear the Chief Minister thinks he has honoured the promise made four years ago.

The group have alleged that its introduction has been significantly delayed because the Council of Ministers feared the implications of the public having access to information held by public authorities.

The Chief Minister has said it will now be upto the next House to decide if they want to take the Bill forward in its present format.
