The Isle of Man could have had its first openly gay bishop - until he was rejected by the committee that appoints our most senior clergyman.
According to reports in the UK media, Jeffrey John, was put forward for the bishop of Sodor and Man in February.
The Guardian says the dean of St Albans Cathedral failed to be shortlisted - despite the Crown Nominations Commission, which includes the archbishop of York John Sentamu, openly saying it didn't object to Dr John's sexuality or long-term civil partnership with another Anglican priest.
In secret ballots, however, he didn't get enough support to make it onto the shortlist for interview.
An announcement about the next Island bishop is expected in the next few weeks.
