One month to have your say on fisheries

Fishermen have less than a month left to tell government how they think the Island’s fisheries should be managed.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has issued a public consultation to gather views on the management of scallops, queen scallops, crabs and lobsters.

It’s because current restrictions around the Baie ny Carrickey area will run out at the end of October.

The bay was closed in order to protect vulnerable marine habitats in the area from the damaging impact of dredgers.

Minister Phil Gawne says the department needs to manage the fisheries so that that they thrive in the long term and says management of an area by local fishermen is one option which could be explored.
