OFT warn homeowners about cowboy builders

Past experience shows that the quality of such building work is to a poor standard

A timely reminder has gone out to householders to be wary of using builders who call at their homes offering to do work.

The warning comes from the Office of Fair Trading after they were made aware of cowboy builders currently operating on the Island.

Past experience shows that the quality of such building work is to a poor standard, and despite numerous warnings by the OFT they say people are still falling victim.

Consumers approached by these builders are often persuaded to accept their offer because they are cheaper than local builders and they can begin straightaway, regardless of that fact you’re always urged to use local reliable building companies.

The OFT also say, many 'cowboy' builders will not be declaring their earnings; will not be VAT-registered even though they may earn many thousands on each job; and will provide worthless verbal or written guarantees.

If a householder has any more concerns they’re urged to contact the Office’s Trading Standards staff on 686520.
