No plans for Island to seek independence

The Chief Minister has confirmed there are no plans at present for the Island to seek independence.

Rushen MHK Laurence Skelly asked the Chief Minister if Government have identified the potential benefits of independence in light of Jersey’s recent call to be ready for it.

Mr Bell said he felt it was not appropriate to make a statement about Jersey’s situation, and confirmed the Island has no plans to change our constitutional status as a British Crown Dependency.

He referred back to the implications of independence report carried out 12 years ago, drawing on the fact that the few advantages to be gained by independence would be seriously outweighed by the potential disadvantages.
