Infrastructure Minister Michelle Haywood says her department looked at London, Belgium and other places before deciding to lower the Island's default urban speed limit.
In the House of Keys this week she faced questions from Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas about plans to introduce 20mph limits in towns and villages.
Dr Haywood said Tynwald had approved the changes as recently as 2023, and the move had received widespread support in Port St Mary.
But she added so far there was no island-based evidence to support the moves:
