New scheme will see drivers prove cars are roadworthy

Motorists could soon be required to prove they've fixed defects with their vehicles if they're stopped by police.

It's hoped the Vehicle Defect Ratification Scheme will be in place by Christmas - Sergeant Steven Lapsley heads up the Roads Policing Unit and explains how it will work: 
 
 
Between now and the end of December police will conduct three roadside events where they will stop vehicles to check they're in a roadworthy condition ahead of winter. 
 
Sergeant Lapsley says his main priority is education:
