Minister defends overseas aid donation

Should government be reducing the amount of money it donates in foreign aid to spend more money on the Island?

That’s a question that’s been raised this week after it was revealed that the Overseas Aid Committee had donated money to Sierra Leone and Sudan.

The committee donates £50,000 each month to some of the world’s poorest countries often after natural disasters.

However many people have criticised the decision especially after government has cut back on a number of services it provides on-island blaming budgetary problems.

Chairman of the Overseas Aid Committee Phil Gawne admits the money could be used on the Island but that he doesn’t agree that it should be.
