Minister concerned over breast cancer question

Health Minister David Anderson MHK

The Health Minister has criticised an East Douglas MHK for a question on breast cancer statistics in the House of Keys today (Tuesday).

Brenda Cannell had tabled a question for the Minister about the number of cases of breast cancer recorded in the last year and how many of these had received breast reconstruction both on and off the Island.

David Anderson revealed that 63 people had been diagnosed with the cancer. 18 of those had undergone mastectomy treatment and three had received breast reconstruction on Island.

However the Minister told Mrs Cannell that he wondered what value she expected to derive from these statistics as she was already aware a diagnosis of breast cancer could result in a range of clinical outcomes.

He added that he was very concerned at any attempt to misuse these statistics to reignite what he called unjustified fears about breast surgery services, which he said were raised in the minds of the Manx public last year.
