Milestone for project to invigorate Ramsey marine sector

A project to boost Ramsey's marine engineering sector hit an important milestone over the weekend.

On Saturday, May 1, shipping company WS Mezeron made use of the shipyard slipway for the first time in 20 years to carry out a special survey of their Silver River vessel.

A phased improvement plan of around £800,000 was undertaken by the Department of Infrastructure after the town's shipyard was identified as an important part of the Harbours Strategy in 2018.

The investment has allowed a series of improvements to be carried out there including resurfacing and provision of services to the boat park area, stabilising quay walls, power supply improvements for the slipways and commercial quayside and replacing haul wires.

The slipways have been used by smaller vessels whilst work to improve them was carried out, but it's hoped the use of the facilities by the larger Silver River craft means the harbour will be able to cater to larger projects.

Infrastructure Minister, Tim Baker MHK, says: "Getting the Silver River on the slipway for this important project is fantastic to see. It symbolises significant progress and provides assurance that the investment being made into our marine sector is paying off for the local economy.

"As a sea-faring nation, it is vital that we protect and encourage growth in this area and I look forward to more large vessels from on and off-island using the new and refurbished facilities."
