MHK claims chief candidate was 'let down'

Rob Callister MHK

A Chief Minister candidate was 'let down' by three MHKs on the morning of the election process.

That's the claim from Onchan MHK Rob Callister who says they changed their vote on Tuesday.

He was backing Ayre and Michael MHK Alf Cannan for the top job saying the public had asked for change.

It was a sentiment echoed by Douglas West representative Chris Thomas who proposed him for the job:

In the end Mr Cannan secured nine votes in the House of Keys compared to Howard Quayle's 12 - in a following Nomination Vote Mr Callister himself changed tack and backed Mr Quayle.

Defending his actions afterwards he said he had to put 'personal feelings to one side' to get behind the newly elected Chief Minister saying the Island is 'a mess' and we have to move on.
