MHK awaits report on legal high before taking steps to have it banned

MDAI is available online and currently has legal status on the Isle of Man

It was revealed in court yesterday that Ramsey teenager Tanya Hughes died following an overdose of legal high MDAI.

Tanya died on her way to Nobles after medics found her to be unresponsive and unconscious at a property in Ramsey.

The substance can be obtained over the Internet and currently retains legal status in the Isle of Man.

The drug is set to carry many of the same affects as Ecstasy and has only a few minor differences to the notorious class A.

Member for Home Affairs Bill Malarkey MHK said it’s currently an ongoing battle to keep on top of the legal high situation as an increasing amount of substances are appearing on the market.

The Advisory Council of Misuse of Drugs are now looking into the substance, and once they report back to the Drugs and Alcohol Strategy team it will then be decided whether or not to put a case to Tynwald to have it banned.
