The DoI is advising drivers to expect severe disruption this afternoon, particularly on Douglas Promenade.
Motorists are asked to avoid the promenade between 5pm and 7pm if at all possible.
In order to assist commuters in their journeys home the crossing points and access corridors will be opened at 5pm and traffic signals will be manually operated.
The horse trams will be suspended during this busy time.
However congestion is inevitable and the public are advised to plan their journeys home to avoid the busiest times or to make alternative travel arrangements.
