Man who stole nearly £1,000,000 refused appeal

A man who stole just under a million pounds from his wife's elderly grandfather has been refused permission to appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

Garry Richard Vernon was convicted of theft in 2023 and jailed for nine years after a jury heard his victim had been living in a nursing home, trusting him to manage his investments, and the offences only came to light after he died.

Just £151,000 of the stolen money was recovered.

After an unsuccessful appeal last year, Vernon asked a court for permission to take his case further.

But Judge of Appeal Cross and Acting Deemsters Wild and Smith said the application was 'completely without merit'.
