Local business looks to build metal recycling unit

A Braddan company has applied for permission to build a metal recycling unit to break up vehicles and machinery.

Island Drainage and Groundwork says the new facility would be built at its waste processing facility at Middle Park in Braddan.

In its planning application, the company says it would build a dark green steel-clad shed that would stand 27 feet high.

It would break up larger vehicles brought to the site, ensuring fluids like oil and coolants could be removed without the threat of pollution.

The company says the site would be secured with a three-metre fence and would have reclaimed metals taken away up to four times a week.

But the firm says it only expects to deal with 100 vehicles a month at most, but very few of those would be as large as coaches or buses.

Island Drainage and Groundwork says it would landscape around the facility to minimise its visual impact.

And the company says it would ship the scrapped vehicles off the Island, taking them to the UK in containers.
