Jail for 'naughty' niece who stole from uncle's law firm

A  Peel woman has been jailed after stealing more than £33,000 from her uncle’s law firm.

32-year-old Fenella Jane Carter, of Christian Avenue, spent her ill-gotten gains on a new horsebox.

At Douglas Courthouse today she was sent to prison for 20 months after previously admitting one count of theft.

The court was told Carter stole £33,700 between August 2009 and June 2011 - during this period she was working as a bookkeeper for Carter’s Advocates.

She made six unauthorised payments into her own accounts – when her offending came to light she told her uncle “I’ve been very naughty and I’ve taken the money”.

Carter spent the money on repayments for a horsebox – her advocate told the court whilst it was “easy to characterise this as a greedy offence” it was for need rather than “extravagance”.

He said she’d had no formal training for the bookkeeping role adding “she was perhaps not best placed to have that level of trust placed in her”.

The court heard Carter had paid back the money prior to her arrest with her advocate adding “everyone involved in this case wants to draw a line and move on”.

Sentencing her Deemster Rosen told her she had “exploited” her position by putting her “hands in the till” adding “I have no doubt at all you were acting dishonestly”.

He also ordered her to pay costs of £500.
