Jail for man who 'can't cope with alcohol'

25-year-old Karl Lilley was restrained by door staff at Sugar Sugar nightclub on Wellington Street at midnight on March 27th. 

 

They'd intervened after seeing an "animated conversation" between Lilley and his girlfriend - police were called after he made threats that he was going to "kill everyone". 

 

He later pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting arrest - at Douglas Courthouse earlier this week his advocate described the incident as a "blip" and said the threats were "idle".

 

He told the court that Lilley normally avoided going out because alcohol was "his enemy" but this was a "one off" and had "rather predictably" ended badly.  

 

Sentencing him at Douglas Courthouse Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said his reaction on the night had been "unacceptable" saying he knew the "trigger" for behaviour like that was alcohol. 

 

She sentenced him to 12 weeks in prison and imposed a one year licensing ban.
