Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall says an Island-wide housing shortage means difficulties for all would-be social tenants.
In the House of Keys this week, he faced questions from Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse about the number of single people waiting to be housed by local authorities or the government.
He said in total around 700 single people are on waiting lists.
But he denied claims anyone was being misled about how long it might take to find them a home:
