IoM life expectancy rises by over five years in two decades

Life expectancy has been steadily rising over the last two decades on the Isle of Man.

That's according to the Minister for Policy and Reform John Shimmin.

It follows a recent question by Douglas West MHK Chris Thomas, as he asked for the current figure in the House of Keys.

It's estimated to have risen by more than five years since 1991 - adding fuel to the aging population debate.

Manx residents would have lived to around 75 and a half years of age from birth in that year, in 2001 it stood at around 79, and in 2011, people here were expected to live until about 81.

It's estimated using the age distribution and death figures in the resident population from census data each year.
